After Tulsa we went to sleep while Mike, our fearless driver, drove us to Dallas. We arrived in Dallas at 12:00 and played Frisbee until our service project started.
Texas is in the top 5 states in the nation for food insecurity, one in 5 children in Texas comes from a food insecure home. Fortunately, there is an organization called North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) who asked Calling All Crows (CAC) to volunteer some hours and help. 53,000 families in 13 counties get monthly assistance through the food bank's “Pantry System”, NTFB can do this because of the widespread support the community and volunteers have given them. In 2009 NTFB started a project titled “Close the Gap”. The 2010 goal is to delivery 42.2 million meals. For our project they had us salvage (go through food that has been given by groceries stores and make sure it is in tip top shape) and create food boxes for families. We worked for 2 hours and packed 10,774lbs of food, which is equal to 8,417 meals for people in Texas. This was our first “alternative team” project and we did an tremendous job. Everyone worked together and helped out, we cleaned, weighed, sorted, boxed, moved, and laughed! The NTFB could be considered the 4 Seasons of food banks, they have tons of programs (including a children’s backpack program ...Brittany- a fellow breaker ,is in charge of a similar program!!) and serve so much of the community, the volunteers and workers were amazing and truly loved/appreciated having us there.
After the food bank we headed to The House of Blues where we got to shower!! This was pretty exciting as #1- they had warm water and #2 - we were pretty dirty and greasy. The show was incredible, the lights were awesome (Matt!!) and the sound was amazing. The crowd was slightly better, but honeslty going to the concert with 9 marvelous people is what made these shows so fantastic. State Radio played two new songs, both of which the group quickly fell in love with. During the encore, Sarah (Canadian breaker extraordinaire) and I went to clip board (sign people up for CAC so they can be involved in future pre-show events) and pass out flyers about CAC 2010 Darfur/Sudan initiatives (Trees, Training, and Donkey Carts. )We had a really good response in Dallas, everyone wanted to know more and they seemed to they really want to get involved in the pre-show activities.
After the show we hung out on the tour bus. Ben (breaker who is making all the amazing videos) went to the back lounge and started creating another video, because he is a rock star. Mike Najarian came on and caught up with all the ABT’ers…they (State Radio) were so nice and personable to us…we won’t soon forget it.
LOVES....
That's lots of food! That is really, really cool! Great Job to you and your awesome friends!
