I received the best "Valentine" last week. It was simple...a red heart with the words "If I only have one life to live, let me live it as a blonde"! Naturally I loved it (loves to you J-Stubbs). Then this week I was watching Gray's Anatomy and one of the brunette characters dyes her hair blonde and gets told ''Blondes are either badass or fun and you're... you're brunette!". All this got me thinking...I truly love being a blonde, I have always been a blonde, and will always be a blonde...but it is hard work and a lot of people can't pull it off.
Wiki states " In contemporary popular culture, it is often stereotyped that men find blonde women more attractive than women with other hair colors. For example, Anita Loos popularized this idea in her 1925 novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Blondes are often assumed to have more fun, for example in a Clairol commercial for hair colorant they use the phrase "Is it true blondes have more fun?" Some woman have reported after lightening their hair they feel other people expect them to be more fun-loving. The "blonde stereotype" is also associated with being less serious or less intelligent. " I read another article that said " Blondes have more fun because people expect less from them."
Here are my thoughts and feeling on being a blonde:
*Nine times out of ten people treat you like an idiot.
*Depending on where you live blondes attract more attention (ie. Tucson- every other girl is blonde. Denver- 1 out of 10 girls might be blonde)
*You can tell a lot about a girl by what color blonde she is (yellow, platinum, sandy, strawberry, golden, ash, dirty blonde, or bleached).
*I personally have many colors of blonde in my hair because I think it looks better (and I have to color it less)
*People may treat me like an idiot but I love surprising people by not being just that.
*I don’t think ANYONE can pull off all over platinum unless they are Gwen Stefani or Marilyn Monroe
* I can tell people who are "fake" blonde. By "fake" I mean they didn’t grow up blonde and just decided to color their hair when it started to darken. They grew up with darker hair color and decided " blonde is better" and colored their hair. I know who you are...you aren’t fooling me.
* Most people can't hack it as blondes and I wish people would stop trying.
That’s being said. I love my hair color, I actually just went lighter because it feels more natural to me. I got to model growing up and during college because I was naturally blonde. It is hard being a blonde...don't kid yourself people do treat us completely differently, not just like idiots but sometimes really horribly, sometimes like you have no care in the world ( this happens to be a lot)...truth is, I bet if most people try to walk a mile in a true blondes shoes...they would find that they pinched a bit.
An homage to people who are kick ass blondes-
You forgot to put a picture up of yourself! Have I told you lately that I love you! I found a huge Marilyn book, a book titled "Blonde Women", and a women artist book (which consists of lots of naked, yet liberating art works of women by women) in my parents garage. I thought that I had lost those books, but they were found. Anyways, you would totally love them. We would get some wine and laugh looking over them together if we lived a little closer. I love how you are such a supporter of the blonde woman. I recall having a conversation with you about how if we dyed our hair brown, people would respect us more. I was definitely one of the lucky people to have a fellow blonde roomie who is smart, kind, humorous, adventurous, and dependable. You definitely can fool the poor soul that underestimates you because of your hair color. Judging someone by their hair is like judging someone of their skin color. It's absurd!!!
